Nobody should quote a buried line they have not seen

Underground line work is the most expensive category on this site, and it is the one where guessing costs the most. The difference between a spot repair at a single failed joint and a full line replacement can be substantial, and the only way to know which one a property needs is to put a camera down the line and look.

Camera evidence establishes three things that determine the entire scope: where the problem is, what kind of problem it is, and how far the damage extends. Root intrusion at one joint is a different job from a bellied section holding water along a run, which is different again from a collapsed segment. Locating the fault also fixes its depth and position, which is what decides how much surface has to be disturbed.

Older neighborhoods across both counties carry clay and cast-iron sewer laterals that have been in the ground for decades. Clay joints are where roots find their way in; cast iron scales internally and corrodes from the inside. Neither is cause for alarm on its own — plenty of these lines are still serviceable — but they behave differently from modern PVC, and they are the reason inspection matters before anyone commits to an approach.

Trenchless versus open excavation

Trenchless replacement rehabilitates a line from access points at each end rather than opening the full run, which usually means far less disruption to driveways, mature landscaping, and hardscape. It suits lines that are continuous and correctly graded but deteriorated.

It is not universal. A line that has collapsed, separated, or lost its grade — a belly that holds standing water — generally cannot be corrected from the inside, because the replacement follows the existing path. Those conditions call for open excavation. Depth, soil, and what sits above the line all factor in, which is again why the camera comes first: it is what makes the choice between the two an informed one rather than a preference.
