Trenchless sewer repair can replace a line without tearing up your yard — but it isn't right for every situation. Here's how to tell which approach fits your problem.
When a sewer line fails, homeowners often picture the worst: a backhoe, a trench across the front yard, and a destroyed lawn or driveway. Trenchless sewer repair can avoid most of that — but it's not magic, and it's not right for every line. Here's an honest breakdown.
The two trenchless methods
Pipe lining (cured-in-place pipe, or CIPP): a resin-saturated liner is pulled or inflated into the existing pipe and cured in place, forming a new pipe inside the old one. Good for pipes that are cracked or leaking but still structurally continuous.
Pipe bursting: a new pipe is pulled through the old line while a bursting head breaks the old pipe outward into the surrounding soil. Good for pipes that are collapsed, badly offset, or need an upsize — because it replaces the pipe entirely rather than lining what's there.
Both need only small access pits at each end instead of a trench along the whole run.
When trenchless is the better call
- The damage is along the run, not at a single fitting. Lining or bursting the whole segment makes sense when the pipe has generalized wear, cracking, or root intrusion.
- The line runs under something expensive. A driveway, mature landscaping, a patio, a sidewalk, or a mature tree. Avoiding excavation there saves the restoration cost, which is often the biggest number in the project.
- The pipe still has a continuous path. Lining in particular needs a pipe that's intact enough to host the liner.
- You want to minimize disruption. Trenchless jobs are typically faster and leave your yard largely intact.
When dig-and-replace still wins
Trenchless isn't always the answer:
- A fully collapsed line with no continuous path may not be linable, though bursting can sometimes still work.
- A single, localized break — one cracked fitting near the surface — is sometimes cheaper to just spot-repair by excavating that one spot than to line the whole run.
- Severe bellies (sags) in the line aren't corrected by lining — the liner follows the same sag. Fixing grade requires excavation.
- Certain pipe materials, transitions, or depths make trenchless impractical, and open sewer line repair is the honest recommendation.
The step that decides it
Notice that every one of these calls depends on knowing the pipe's actual condition — and you can't know that from the surface. That's why a camera inspection comes first, always. The camera shows:
- Where the damage is and what kind it is
- Whether the pipe can host a liner or needs bursting or excavation
- Whether there's a belly, an offset, or a collapse
- How deep the line runs and where the access points would go
Any plumber quoting a trenchless job without scoping the line first is guessing. The inspection is what turns "we think it's the sewer" into a specific plan with a real price.
